  • Start early! Give yourself AT LEAST several months to prepare for Step 1.
  • Prepare a study calendar. Decide which subjects you will study on what days and stick to the plan. Spend more time on particular weaknesses.
  • Establish a firm basic science knowledge
  • Do as many questions as you can from multiple sources. Step 1 is an exam of pattern recognition, and the more questions you do, the more likely you are to recognize the pattern on the actual exam.
  • Study with a friend.
  • Take breaks! Study for 60 minutes, give yourself a break, then continue studying a different subject. Remember to take a day off every now and then.
  • Realize that you will not master everything. There is an overwhelming volume of material on Step 1. Accept the fact that you will not master every last detail.
The day before and the day of the exam.
  • Take the day off prior to the exam. Do something fun and try and relax.
  • Pack a lunch the night before.
  • Get a good night sleep.
  • Wake up early enough on exam day so you do not have to rush.
  • Eat a large, healthy breakfast.
  • Stay hydrated throughout the exam.
  • Use your break time! Remember that finishing a section early is addition break time. Use it!
  • Put eye drops in during break to prevent eye fatigue.
  • Take deep breaths to try and relax.
  • When you are finished with the exam, congratulate yourself on completing a milestone in your medical education. Go out and celebrate! ... or just go to sleep, because you will be exhausted!
  • Good luck!
